Thank you for your interest in the Urban Community Gardening Class! This class was created by the desire of community members and students in the Landscape Horticulture Program at Merritt College for more involvement in community gardening projects and school gardens. To make the class accessible to everyone it is being offered as a NO FEE, Open Entry/Open Exit, Repeatable class (you can attend as many or as few meetings as your schedule permits). Students can join the class at any time and participate as their schedules allow. CLASS MEETINGS are held on
both Tuesday, at the Horticulture Dept. (9:00-12:00), and Wednesday, at Lakeside
Park (9:00-12:00), in the garden! You are welcome to attend either or both sessions.
Since this class is repeatable, everyone is invited to sign up for as long as they are
interested in community gardening! The focus of the class is to help community members organize, plan, design,
build, plant and maintain gardens throughout the Bay Area.
During the semester class members will help plan, plant, maintain, harvest and
distribute produce from the Demonstration Garden at Lakeside Park. We also are
available to work in various school and community gardens in different parts of the
city and see their operation and maintenance. If you would like to participate, all you have to do to register is call either Tom
Branca at 436-2593 or Merritt College Admissions and Records at 436-2487/2488 and
ask for a registration form, you might also be able to register over the phone. You can
also show up in the garden on any Tuesday (Horticulture Dept.) or Wednesday (Lakeside Park) and get an application in person. The listing for the class is Urban Community Gardening, LH-501 and it is offered every semester year round.
